The Creative Capital

Fellows in this track will be placed in Cebu City

The largest city in the Visayas region, Cebu is known by many names: the Queen City of the South, the Creative Capital. With an unparalleled ecosystem of designers, manufacturers, artists, galleries, and other everyday creatives, Cebu is positioned to lead as not only the creative center of the Philippines – but of Southeast Asia as a whole.

In an era of global networks and technology, how can Cebu draw upon its creative strengths to grow the local economy, embolden local culture, and include a broader range of communities into the conversation?

Potential host organizations include:

CROSSROADS

Crossroads Cebu is a lifestyle center in Banilad, Cebu featuring a selection of homegrown firsts in Cebu retail, food, art, and entertainment establishments. Crossroads Cebu’s focus is to contribute to creative economy’s growth in the city by showcasing some of the best local brands alongside art, design, and craft showroom-gallery spaces in a work-play community.

ANTHILL FABRIC GALLERY

ANTHILL is a social and cultural enterprise in the Philippines working to preserve local fabrics through contemporary design to sustain livelihood and tradition. Their core products take tribal weaves from partners in indigenous communities and embeds them in contemporary urban clothing that the everyday Filipino can feel proud of.

RAPPLER

Rappler’s Cebu bureau works to cover stories and amplify voices from the area – and also train local Cebuanos as journalists, writers, and active citizens.

THE TIDE

The TIDE (Technology Innovation Design Entrepreneurship) is the premier co-working space in Cebu City, Philippines. Their mission is to help Cebu City develop into a robust tech startup scene. Building a great co-working space (with high-speed Internet) is the ideal place to foster the creative mingling necessary for that growth.

Fellows with the TIDE will either work on general community building or be placed in EngageSPARK, a startup that has developed an online platform that enables governments, development institutions, and companies to reach their constituents at scale through SMS and voice call campaigns.
